In 2014, ESNDC received the Mayor’s Sustainable Saint Paul Award for providing energy-related assistance to businesses on Payne Avenue and Arcade Street. We worked with Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and the Energy Smart Project to offer free programs for businesses to learn ways to become more energy efficient, while also providing financing to help businesses cover the costs associated with energy improvements.

Is my business required to recycle? If you are the owner of a commercial building that meets the following criteria, you will need to have recycling collection:

  • Located in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, or Washington county
  • Contains one or more businesses classified in sectors 42 to 81 under the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS codes)
  • Contracts for four cubic yards or more per week of trash collection

To date, about 25 local businesses have taken advantage of no-cost on-site energy consultations, forgivable loans and Xcel Energy rebates. Improvements made by business owners resulted in a 50% reduction of their energy bills.

While building on this momentum of sustainable redevelopment ESNDC secured a grant through BizRecycling, an organization that offers grants of up to $10,000 to help businesses in Ramsey and Washington County conduct outreach activities and provide education to business owners in order to reduce solid waste, advance recycling practices and promote reuse. Regardless of whether or not your business must recycle, it just makes sense. Don’t throw your profits out with the trash. By practicing waste prevention, reusing products, recycling whenever possible, and making environmentally conscious purchases, your business can not only meet the mandates, but also cut costs, increase profits, and help the environment.
